Water authorities may require that where a hose system runs from the mains, you should incorporate a non-return valve to prevent back-syphoning. This occurs when there is a sudden loss in water pressure – through a broken pipe or the water being turned off for maintenance – allowing dirty water to be sucked into the mains, contaminating the system.
This is especially relevant if you are using a Soaker Hose or drip-feed system.
